Secondlife Rules

Social Rules

By the end of this page you will have a sound understanding of the two communities that exist in the virtual world and the accepted behaviour expected in Secondlife.

Secondlife is split into two communities

Teen Grid

Age 13-17

The teen grid is categorised as PG rated.

Adult access is limited to, with the proper clearances,

  • Educators who are limited to their respective islands where they educate their charges in SL.
  • Linden staff members for monitoring and management.

Main Grid

The main grid is categorised as PG (Parental guidance), M (Mature), and A (Adult) and is for anyone 18 years and older.

Maturity and content

Mature behaviour is expected by residents regardless of which grid they reside on and are expected to behave respectfully to their fellow residents.
Mature behaviour and language should be performed in the regions designated as M which can be found next to the region name located at the top of your SL viewer window.
In the regions marked PG, residents are expected to refrain from speech language sound and images that are not acceptable to the general public.
You cannot push or shove another persons avatar by walking into them on purpose, by weapons, vehicles or scripted objects.
If you accidentally push an avatar it is considered courtesy to apologise.
Battle is confined to the non-safe regions or resident owned regions, so pushing avatars at these places is allowed if mutually agreed upon.
These regions are designated as fighting areas and can be identified by the heart icon at the top of your screen.

For more details on the rules you can read the terms and services community standards pages on the Secondlife.com website.  (secondlife.com, 2016)

All Second Life regions, search listings, and Marketplace listings have a maturity rating that designates the type of content and its suitability for different age groups.  The maturity ratings are General, Moderate, and Adult.  See the following articles for details:

"Regardless of which grid a Resident lives on, he or she is expected that to behave maturely and respectfully to their fellow residents."
(secondlife.com, 2016)

That wasn't too hard was it, what the rules are basically saying is, be nice, treat others as you would like to be treated, that is with respect.

Consequences

There are consequences, and they come in three stages, this is my simple description of these three stages as I remember them, please feel free to correct me If I'm mistaken.

Warning

You act badly or misbehave, like say being rude or bullying others, then you may find you have been reported to the proper authorities, who will in response send you a message to please refrain from such unacceptable behaviour.

Final warning

They tried to tell you but you just would not listen, this is your final warning you have been banned from SL for a few weeks, come on what did you think would hapen, remember this is a real community not just a game

Blocked for life

Oh well, maybe for you it was just a game, I have met many mean people over my 10 years on Second Life so I've pretty much seen it all, maybe it was a mistake, maybe it wasn't, either way your ip address have now been banned for life, what ever amount of time, resources and money that you have invested into SL is now lost to you forever.

Dealing with trouble

Sometimes you may have to deal with difficult people who could be harassing you. To deal with unpleasant circumstances you are given these opportunities:

Assessment

This assessment is designed to see how you feel about the basic rules of social behaviour in SL as well as to help to improve this page.
